Synopsis:
A short film from Julia Kwan, Director of Eve and the Firehorse
Set in Vancouver in the 1980’s, SMILE explores the small, subtle fractures in a Chinese
immigrant family on the day they use their cut-out Sears coupon for a free family portrait.
This film steers away from any overly dramatic, penultimate scenes but instead, focuses on
the small, funny and sometimes painful moments that erode a family unit. “Told from the
perspective of the youngest daughter of a Chinese immigrant family, this endearing story
recounts the events surrounding the taking of a family portrait. The central dilemma – which
gives the film its title – arises as the family navigates differing cultural customs in this
intimate and adept character study” – Agata Smoluch, Toronto Film Festival Programmer
